THE WIND TAUGHT ME FREEDOM

E-mail   By M.A. McDuffee  Bio/Address

The wind taught me

   about freedom today.

   What it means and

   to whom it belongs.

I watched the wind

   blow across the yard today.

   Over fence and razor wire,

   trapped only for a moment.

I listened, then it was gone,

   free to blow through trees

   or a pretty girl's hair,

   freedom, thought I, is fleeting,

Freedom belongs to everyone

   and then to no one.

   It can cost nothing,

   or cost you your life.

Freedom is what we seek

   but seldom ever find.

   Sometimes it's leaving us

   a little less behind.
