Since the loss of inmate eligibility for Pell grants, approximately half of the college programs for inmate students have been dismantled, and many of the remaining programs have been cut back severely. The thirst for a college education is still present among the inmate population, and the number of inquiries received in the Correction Education Association office from inmates regarding where to find college courses and how to fund those college courses reflects the desire the incarcerated have for higher learning.

Until now, there has been little CEA could suggest to these inmates other than to check with the education director at their institution. Now, however, inmate students and education directors alike have an invaluable resource: Jon Marc Taylor's Prisoners' Guerilla Handbook to Correspondence Programs in the United States and Canada. While Taylor spends time justifying why a guide to correspondence programs specifically for prisoners is necessary, this book clearly meets an important need that goes unacknowledged in more mainstream guides meant for the general public.

REVIEWS

"Every inmate and prison librarian will be fired up by the opportunities for prisoner education that this manual clearly presents. Every inmate will be challenged and encouraged by the number, diversity and availability of education programs within reach of pen and paper."

~Sheila Maroney - Fortune News

"This book offers a complete description of 212 programs that are ideal for prisoners seeking to earn high school diplomas, associate, baccalaureate and graduate degrees and vocational certificates. In addition to giving contact information for each school, Taylor includes tuition rates, text book costs, courses offered, transfer credits, time limits for completing course, whether the school is accredited, and if so by whom, and much, much more."
