THE DECLINING PRINCIPLE OF TRUST
E-Mail By Bobby E. Neble Bio/Address
From birth to the grave, trust is a never-ending concept that must be dealt with. It's not something that can be ignored or overlooked. Yet, in a lot of ways the principle has become hidden from our eyes. Only deep in the subconscious do we remain fully cognizant of its significance.
Our first encounter with the principle of trust actually occurs before we have any understanding of it — in the womb. There, we rely upon the trust of our mother. After birth and through the preceding weeks, months, and years of early childhood, we begin to understand about this trust. Both parents play a critical role in our understanding, as do older siblings and relatives.
The first bond of trust that we recall is the one that seems the most natural — being picked up and carried around by our parents and relatives. We have little or no memories of being scared every time we were lifted up into the arms of one of these individuals. Yet, studies show that infants who were accidentally dropped or mishandled by a parent or adult do show reactions when confronted with the same situation.
From these early childhood stages all the way into our teens, we are confronted with new cycles of trust. For the parents that cultivate these bonds, we continually gain new awareness and understanding of them. We have realized that trust is a two-way street; the more you demonstrate that you're trustworthy, the more trust that is bestowed upon you.
As we continue to grow and educate ourselves, we see that almost everything in America is based on some form of trust. Our founding fathers were the proponents of trust. They founded our country in the belief that trust in your fellow man was a greater asset than trust in a sovereign ruler. In an era that was infested with spies, turncoats, and deception, these distinguished gentlemen placed trust in each other, as well as in the concept of democracy.
Isn't it ironic, that on the subject of religion and god the most biased, close-minded individuals are in constant contact with him everyday? Everyone in America, as well as most of the civilized world, utilizes American currency. The fact that this currency states: "IN GOD WE TRUST" is one solid proof that we still have some trust in God. It might be ignored or explained away as being just mere words on paper by the skeptics and disbelievers, but it is a testament to the many who continue to adhere the time honored principle of trust in our society. It is conclusive evidence that a spark of trust remains and is still being incorporated in today's diverse culture, despite all the attempts to eradicate such.
We should strive to keep this spark alive. It is clear that we need to. Every day we hear about prominent leaders in our society that are breaching the trust of the public. We hear of courts ruling against the principles of God's trust in the nation's schools and governing institutions. It is easy to become discouraged when confronted with all these negatives forces. The one key factor to remember is that trust, in all its forms, has been around since man has had the ability to reason and think. Our continued support, participation and education of this key principle will ensure that it remains in focus for many generations to come.
