Death Penalty Dropped

On October 17, 2008, Zolo Agona Azania accepted a plea agreement in Indianapolis that will ensure he avoids the death penalty.  The request for a death sentence from the Lake County prosecutor was dropped. 

Mr. Azania resolutely maintains his innocence. He could have taken a plea bargain that would have freed him in three years, but he has chosen to continue trying to prove his innocence in the federal court.  Thus, he will be imprisoned seven years more.

Mr. Azania has spent more time on Death Row at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City than any other current inmate.
