Wake Up

By:  James E. Ford

Won’t you wake up?

Can’t you see?

There’s more to life than the penitentiary.

You’re not that old, but you’ve done a lot of years.

Most of your time been spent in different pens.

You claim to be a man

but there’s a lot you don’t understand.

Tell me, what type of man

would leave his wife and kids

out there in this wicked land?

They need someone strong to love them

and treat them right.

Take them by the hand and

guide them through life.

But you won’t straighten up and

it will happen again.

The Gray Goose will ride in and

transport you to another pen.

You won’t get it because

you’ll never act right.

I don’t know what you like better

the penitentiary or your wife?

Won’t you wake up?

Can’t you see?

There’s more to life than the penitentiary.

It’s amazing how you walk around the yard

like you’re the shit,

while your wife struggles day to day

to take care of your kids.

You know deep down in your heart

that’s not even right.

You need to grow up and

move on with life.

Because right now you’re

a poor example of a man, and

if it was judgment day

you wouldn’t stand a chance.

Won’t you wake up?

Can’t you see?

There’s more to life than the penitentiary.
