The Spirit Within
People in prison shouldn't be discarded statistics. They're human beings with a spiritual core.
Russell Day is a twenty-nine year old man who
has spent thirteen years behind bars. He's been involved in various programs the Choices
video project (a documentary geared towards helping troubled teens), Yokefellows, NAACP,
National Junior Chamber of Commerce, creative writing workshop, substance abuse
programming and general studies through the University of Maine. For eight years,
he's been a religious leader in the Circle of New Life pagan group at Maine State prison.
He has helped in the national distribution of education and assistance packets to
other pagan prisoners fighting for their religious freedoms. He has also led the passing
services for one inmate whose life was cut short.
When approached with the idea of being the
editor for articles on prison spirituality, Russell was both intimidated and nervous, but
the exploration and potential rewards were too exciting to pass up. We hope you, the
reader, are as deeply rewarded as you explore the views and insights shared here.
