Brief Biography of Curtis Haybert "Habe " Lawson
(AKA: Hayward Curtis Lawson)
Born Aug. 30, 1937 in Kenvir, KY, one of 7 children, the only boy.
Moved to Denver as a young child with his family, as his father had black lung disease and had to leave coal mining in Harlan County, Ky for his health.
Trouble with the law (stealing) at age 12 and sent to Lookout Mountain in Golden, C0. Off and on in trouble as a teen.
Been incarcerated in Colorado jails/prisons off and on since young man of 18. Been doing a life sentence in
Colorado prisons since 1973. Been denied parole 5 times since 1993. Was in Denver
halfway house program from Sept. 1995 to June 1996 with problems--held the same
job the entire time. CO Dept. of
Corrections sent him back to prison in June 1996, saying he was not "parolable".
Habe is 66 (as of 2004) and was granted parole on his 9th hearing before the
Colorado Board of Parole Jan. 16, 2004. As a lifer, he has 5 years of
parole.
Married Dianne Tramutola-Lawson (by proxy) in Dec. 1982. Has 3 grown children and 8 grandchildren by his first marriage, which lasted 20 years.
Currently housed at the Arrowhead Correctional Center in Canyon City, a minimum security facility.
NOTE: All his life Hayward Lawson thought that was his real given name, until a few years ago when he got a copy of his birth certificate from KY. His real name is: CURTIS HAYBERT LAWSON.
However, he will always go by Hayward Curtis Lawson, because all the records reflect that as his name in
Colorado
He had NO idea how he got his nickname of "Habe", but now he sees it came from Haybert.
